چکیده

Denoising has always been theoretically considered as removal of high frequency disturbances having Gaussian distribution. Here We relax this assumption and the method used here is completely different from traditional thresholding schemes. The data are converted to wavelet coefficients, a part of which represents the denoised signal and the remaining part the noise. The coefficients are distributed to bins in two types of histograms using the principles of Minimum Description Length. One histogram represents noise which can not be compressed easily and the other represents data which can be coded in small code length. The histograms made can have variable width for bins. The proposed denoising method based on variable bin width histograms and MDL principle is tested on simulated and real data and compared with other well known denoising methods.

Extensions to MDL denoising

The minimum description length principle in wavelet denoising can be extended from the standard linear-quadratic setting in several ways. We describe briefly three extensions: soft thresholding, histogram modeling and a multicomponent approach. The MDL hard thresholding approach based on the normalized maximum likelihood universal modeling can be extended to include soft thresholding shrinkage,...

The minimum description length principle for probability density estimation by regular histograms

The minimum description length principle is a general methodology for statistical modeling and inference that selects the best explanation for observed data as the one allowing the shortest description of them. Application of this principle to the important task of probability density estimation by histograms was previously proposed. We review this approach and provide additional illustrative e...

MDL Histogram Density Estimation

We regard histogram density estimation as a model selection problem. Our approach is based on the information-theoretic minimum description length (MDL) principle, which can be applied for tasks such as data clustering, density estimation, image denoising and model selection in general. MDLbased model selection is formalized via the normalized maximum likelihood (NML) distribution, which has se...

A New Complexity Prior for Multiresolution Image Denoising

Application of the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle to multiresolution image denoising has been somewhat unsuccessful to date. This disappointing performance is due to the crudeness of the underlying prior image models, which lead to overly sparse solutions. We propose a new family of complexity priors based on Rissanen's universal prior for integers , which produces estimates with be...

Mdl - Based Translation - Invariant Denoising Androbust Time - Frequency

A translation-invariant denoising method, based on the Minimum Description Length (MDL) criterion and the Shift-Invariant Wavelet Packet Decomposition (SIWPD) is presented. A collection of signal models is generated using an extended library of orthonormal wavelet-packet bases, and an additive cost function, approximately representing the MDL principle, is derived. We show that the minimum desc...
